History Established in 1908 As the oldest heating and ventilating company in the Bay Area , Atlas has been as much a part of San Francisco as the cable cars and Golden Gate Bridge, helping to rebuild the City after the 1906 earthquake. Atlas' history is a veritable history of the furnace itself. In 1908, most homes were heated by pot-bellied stoves or kitchen ranges. George Tuck, the founder of Atlas, designed and manufactured wood and coal furnaces, establishing Atlas as the largest installer of "warm air" furnaces in the Bay Area. Always an innovator, Tuck next developed the Atlas gas furnace for manufactured gas, the first integrated blower furnace and a safety pilot light. With the advent of natural gas, the firm's all steel furnace became a leader in the industry. The family-run business has continued to prosper guided by three generations of Tucks. The founder's son, Robert G. Tuck ran the company for 30 years with brothers Douglas and James. Bob Tuck, grandson of George, is now president of Atlas. Meet the Business Owner: Bob T. Bob graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in 1972. He went to work full time at Atlas Heating and AC in 1977 after a brief career on stage and in radio. Bob has served as a director on the Board of the Sheetmetal Air Conditioning National Association, as President of Oakland Bay Area SMACNA, and as President of the West Oakland Commerce Association. Bob is active in volunteer work, working with Christmas in April, Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together. Bob is married with two sons, one of whom who joined the company 2007.

As good as it gets. I called PG&E to light my pilot. I was informed my pilot generator was weak and I might need to replace my thermostat wire. I called Atlas because my family has always used them in the past. It's always nice to work with a nice and courteous company like Atlas.  The receptionist was very friendly, got me a next day appointment . The next day a very nice technician named Eric S. came and saved the day. After he left I had to place an call to inform his superior Lisa T. of the excellent work he performed. Atlas deserves by far 10 stars. One lessons learned you get what you pay for when working with a professional company such as Atlas heating company.

I had 5 different contractors look at our heating needs in our drafty old victorian with a furnace from the early 80's. Atlas was the ONLY one who actually did a thorough investigation of my entire house, the heating losses due to drafts, windows and uninsulated walls and then made a sketch of exactly what they would do and calculated the exact size furnace I needed. Their price was actually less than another company I read about here (who came out for 10 minutes and gave me a proposal with hardly one complete sentence). I am SO glad I hired Atlas. My house is warm now and their team of installers were friendly, careful and professional.

With our AC out on a very hot Sunday I called Atlas. They had an experienced tech, Chris, on site in about one hour. He diagnosed and fixed the problem (a bad capacitor) and was gone within an hour. We are cool again.

Atlas installed our heating/AC over 10 years ago and I was impressed with them at the time. They had experienced workers with everything they needed in the truck (including sheet metal fabrication), were not fazed by glitches, worked efficiently and made things look easy. It seems Atlas has not changed. I do not know how their rates compare with others but if they happen to be higher that is fine - they are worth it.

It seems the more modern HVAC equipment needs more maintenance than the old stuff. (We found the same thing with smarter kitchen appliances.) So I am going to call them for a regular tune-up maintenance on our units.

Definitely recommended.

My project was fairly simple -- checking and turning on our heaters, replacing fuses, checking thermostats, replacing filters, but the technician was knowledgeable, friendly, and not overpriced.  Their price for filters was comparable with what I paid in the hardware store later.

From sales to installation this company deserves its 5 star rating from me and others.  Even the City inspector says they 'are the best.'  It's lovely to have the a/c on the warm days and I know we'll be cozy this winter when it's cold.  The guys who performed the installation were all great, hardworking, personable & knew what they were doing.  Hire Atlas if you want the best.

Ok, so I *had* a rocky start with these guys. Getting the breakdown of the job (parts, labor, etc.) was difficult, and they didn't initially lay the vents in a manner which made my attic stay useable. I was furious with both things.
BUT
Here is what to love tremendously: they admitted that these things were rocky, didn't try to play it off, were *gracious* about it (truly!), AND took responsibility for their part. They are slated to come back and re-route the vents so the space is more useable, and they gave me a good breakdown of the expenses (even straight-forward on the mark-ups) so I could use them for my taxes.

Even without the drama portions, the guys who came to work on the job were helpful, really lovely guys. One even pointed out to me that I had money sitting out, and that I should put it away when folks come to work on the house. They are conscientious, cleaned-up after themselves, and a good bunch, really.

Further, they worked quickly, the heating system works wonderfully, and they used quality materials. I would work with them again in a heartbeat.

I've used Atlas to service our HVAC system for over 15 years and have only good things to say about them.  Shortly after I bought the small office building, they found some problems with the heating/air conditioning system and presented options for repair or replacement.   A dozen years later, I'm glad I had them install a new system.  It's been trouble-free, and their maintenance program keeps it running smoothly.  In fact, they noticed suggested twice/year inspection/service instead of quarterly, given the lack of problems.  An honest, reliable provider of quality service.

I just want people to know that I Am So Pleased with Atlas Heating & Air Conditioning Company!  I called this afternoon not expecting to get an appointment today, but they were able to fit me in.  Chris Rowe did my repair.  My parents had this heater installed about 15 years ago. To my knowledge, they didn't have any checkups/repairs.   It's been working fine until a couple of days ago.  And for those living in the Bay Area, YOU KNOW how cold it has been here the past couple of weeks. Talk about Professional, Knowledgeable and Friendly... Chris has all of those boxes checked.  In fact, I was so pleased with his work that I  pre-paid for a followup appt.  within a year. Chris Rowe is The Man!

This was one of the most pleasant repair experiences i have ever had. the service tech, Eric, was right on time, friendly, polite, and very competent. He got to work after asking me a few questions, and quickly found the problem -- a $50 part. He could have sold me a much more expensive repair, but was honest and straightforward. His work, including an optional tune-up/safety check that i opted for, took about an hour, including the post-repair test.

Eric left no mess, answered all my questions, and tightened up a few loose screws that weren't part of the repair, all while patiently answering my questions about our furnace. Every part of this transaction was pleasant and professional -- from my first phone call (actually answered by a pleasant human being), through Eric's final goodbye.

HIGHLY Recommended! Atlas did a great job and I will certainly use them again.

BTW: THREE other shops didn't even bother to call me back -- all highly rated on YELP. And the one that did return my call was too busy to take the job.

On time, professional, courteous, thorough and reasonably priced -- what more can I say about Atlas Heating and the way, Erick, one of the repair crew, checked-out, and cleaned my 24-year-old heater!

It was a pleasure paying for excellent work.

Top Notch HVAC

I've used them for repair and also for a custom DIY part. Both times they have been stellar. Their staff is well-trained and have good company loyalty. They work well together. The professionalism is consistent from reception to the on-site techs. The office is neat and organized. Both are good indicators of a healthy company.

For the repair they gave us a 4 hour window and stuck to it. The cost of labor was reasonable. What I especially liked was that the technician didn't mind me hovering over him, asking questions, and poking stuff. That's very cool to have that kind of patience and easy going attitude.

After he was done he cleaned up his mess, summarized the repair, and gave me an itemized receipt. Easy-tidy-effective. Our 50 year old furnace has been running great ever since.

Only one negative comment. When I called to report the furnace problem, I asked if it was serious enough to stop using the furnace until they fixed it. The receptionist had someone call me to answer that. Well a nice guy Steve called me back and said it was fine. Well it turns out Steve is the parts guy, and was talking out his ass. The REAL tech diagnosed the problem and gently informed me that a small explosion was likely. They should keep Steve away from the phones.

We just had a new heating unit installed in our little house in Albany by Atlas Heating and thought a few details of our experience from start to finish might be helpful to others contemplating a similar upgrade.

We had an ancient Atlas floor furnace (dating from the 1930s, we think) that had been repaired a couple times, but after doing a bathroom remodel we thought we should push ahead w/ a central system, a York model.

I teach at a university where writing evaluations of performance and recommendations is a typical part of the job.  I can say that we were very pleasantly surprised with the degree of professionalism, courtesy, and solid work ethic we encountered in two Atlas employees, Mr. Bruce Trestrail (who did the initial estimate) and the installer, Eric Turcios.

For starters, Bruce spent over an hour doing an energy assessment of our 960 sq. foot house, including measuring windows and going under the house to look at all existing gas lines and space restrictions.  He explained things in detail and with good humor, so it was easy to understand what we were getting into.  His written estimate came within 24 hours of the initial meeting, just as he said it would.

By contrast, we did a second estimate with another heating company and their estimator spent about 20 min. poking around, did not go under the house, and then had to be prompted to send the estimate.  It was about $1000 over Atlas' estimate of $7700.

The real "star" of this review is Eric.  He faced some daunting space limitations and a challenging work area in the crawl space under the house, but he never complained and worked diligently and carefully each of the four days he was at the house.  He explained to us what he would do in advance, kept his work areas neat, and cleaned up at the end of each day (which we really appreciated, given that our "yard" is a half-lot).  He even got used to taking off his shoes when coming inside (another courtesy we greatly appreciated).  Eric was also incredibly patient when, on the last morning, we decided to change the location of the register in our bedroom, causing him to once again go under the house to site a new placement.

A senior installer (whose name was Steve I believe) came by on the afternoon of the 3rd day to provide some backup but other than that, Eric completed the majority of the work.

As a result of Bruce's initial configuration of the job and Eric's expert installation, we now have for the first time a centrally heated house where we can walk from room to room without out bracing for blasts of cold air.  We are most appreciative of the care given to this job and think the Yelp community should know there is a reputable heating company in the area.

I would give 10 stars if I could! When I bought my home several years ago the previous owner left Atlas' business card tacked up by the furnace...best gift ever! I have used the company on several occasions and have found them to be beyond awesome each and every time.  I have had Ian service both my furnace & air conditioning unit and he is the BEST! Honest, friendly, punctual, and extremely knowledgeable.  Would never use anyone else......

I have to give the folks at Atals five stars, because they've been so great for me and my clients over a period of 15 years.  I work in residential remodeling, and Atlas has been my go-to HVAC company for most of the time I've been involved in this business.  Bob Tuck, who runs the place, is SO knowledgeable - he has in-depth knowledge of HVAC systems, and can explain them very patiently to folks with varying different degrees of understanding of HVAC basics.  We had them install our furnace at our home, which replaced an ancient Tuck-Aire furnace, built by his family company in 1934 (Bob has inheritied the company from his family).  We are very satisfied with the system that they put in for us, and we know they priced it very fairly.

Just completed my annual heating system inspection and maintenance with Atlas.  I'v used them from many, many years.  Their service techs are the best.  They are punctual, courteous, friendly, knowledgeable and professional.  They deserve a full five starts [I'd give them six if I could].

I interviewed several HVAC businesses to bid on my furnace and duct replacement. The quotes were all fairly close in price, and each company ended up recommending the same unit due to the furnace space configuration. What sold me on Atlas was that they have been in business for 100 years, they use union labor, and they answered all of my many, many questions.

Everyone I dealt with at Atlas was professional and courteous. They even came back and adjusted my thermostat for me a few months later for free. My heater is installed, works great, my PG&E bills are lower, and the city inspector told me he was hiring Atlas to do his own house.

Called Atlas -- and several other heating companies -- to get information and set up an appointment for someone to come out to look at the broken furnace. They offered an appointment with a four-hour window midweek. I work in the city and mentioned that something with a shorter window and earlier in the day would be better. They offered me 8-8:30 am, first appointment on Thursday. Bingo! They called the day before to remind me of the appointment. The repairman, Ian, showed up right on time. He dove into the dark crawlspace where the furnace lives without a moment of hesitation. He diagnosed the problem, a blown capacitor, in under 10 minutes. He had the replacement part on his truck, fixed it and was out the door before 9 am. Ian was friendly and professional. His shirt said he's been with Atlas for 15 years, so people must like to work there. A perfect repair experience, and that is a rare occurrence for me. I would absolutely call them again and recommend them!

Atlas came out today and serviced my furnace which I am embarrassed to say I had never had done today.  The technician, Chris R., came out and was very nice and explained everything to me.  I will definitely be calling them this summer to service my air conditioner.

Just had a service call by Ian.  We have a an old furnace that didn't ignite reliably.  He arrived promptly and was very courteous.  We ask visitors to take off their shoes and he did so happily.
He talked me through his diagnosis and did a terrific job.  As first time homeowners, I had alot of questions about the furnace, some related to the job, some not, and he answered all of my questions.  Top marks for performance, professionalism, and friendliness.  I'll never use another AC/Heating company.

Below is a snippet of a letter I wrote to Atlas. One thing I didn't mention in the letter is that when the installer couldn't make it on the original date, they called and rescheduled and no problem. Another is that even thought the original estimate had expired by the time I called, they still honored it. Finally, I had gotten 3 estimates, and theirs beat the stuffing out of the others -- yet the work was first rate. Now the snippet:

"A little over a month ago you replaced my aging gas heater in a York high-efficiency unit at the address above. This is the third home I've owned, and so I have dealt with many contractors of all types over the years. None have ever exceeded the level of service and value that you provided, and precious few have come close.

All of the Atlas personnel I cam in contact with, including Fletcher Tyler, Vivian Guiton, and Aaron Bright, were professional, courteous, and helpful. Mr. Bright, the installer, did clean, solid work that easily passed city inspection."
